Hangin’ in Hot Springs…
Hello fellow displaced designers and friends. It’s still hard to imagine how much the storm has changed the lives of so many people in such a short period of time. Just 2 weeks ago I was meeting with new clients, art directing photos shoots, and building my business up to where I always wanted it to be. Katrina has been a devistating event for a lot of people, but it has motivated me to do whatever it takes to continue doing what I love. Enough of my rambling, I wanted to post some photos of what I saw yesterday of what the landscape looks like in Jefferson Parish right outside of New Orleans. Thanks to Matt and The Chopping Block as well as Shalin at Noise 13. Coincidently, I was able to finally get through to FEMA today and they have proven to be very helpfull. I was able to register my personal losses as well my business losses. So if you are a freelancer you are eligable for Personal Property Help, Small Business Losses in income, as well loss of equipment. Call as soon as you can. I will be meeting with several designers here in Arkansas and hopefully they can offer some help to myself as well as others. Below are some photos to took when I made the 36 hour journey home to New Orleans :

As a designer from the UK, I can only say how proud I am to see fellow creative people our chipping in to help out the people of New Orleans. You guys are stars - If you need any help, let me know.

it is nice that we designers can do things like this to help one another… we know how to make these things. it is sad that something like this cannot be narrowly focused all all disciplines and professions.
well, not easily anyway.

Scott, I am glad to hear that your journey to recovery has begun! Soon you will once again be meeting with new clients, art directing photos shoots, and building your business up to where you always wanted it to be… You and your friends have a huge support system here in NYC and all over the country. I hope all of the goodwill and philanthropy extends far into the future!

Scott, how did you get back into town? I thought they weren’t allowing anyone back. I’d like to make a claim with FEMA but don’t know the extent of the damage. Are you staying at your home, or did you just go in to retrieve things?
To all who question the utility of offering spaces far from New Orleans, please know that people spread out in ALL directions, mostly where they could find family and friends, and we will all need to find work. Thank you for your kind offers, wherever they are.

I know Scott, and am glad to know he’s doing well. I’m in Lafayette looking for some work myself, and like you, my freelance business has pretty much been lost from all of this. Good luck.

Hi Scott-
How were you able to get fema to help? I haven’t been able to get in and see my studio yet - only talked to the building’s owner. When I talked to them and told them I didn’t know extent of damage to my studio (rented), just that it was bad, loss of equipment, loss of clients, etc., I was told they couldn’t help me and that my claim would be forwarded to SBC - for a loan - no help at all. Thanks - glad you’re going well!

I work for a design/web development agency in Little Rock. Great office. Great people. My boss has expressed interest in hiring a displaced designer or even developer.
Contact me if you or someone you know is interested.

I was reffered to this site by a friend and was wondering if I fit the mold. Having served as a designer, production artist, web designer, web production and IT Director, I think I do.
I’m now living in Arizona and am looking for work. If anyone has an lead or helpful info, please pass it on.
